Upcoming gigs

Phew! Now that the influx of Summer / Autumn bookings has died down, I can finally have a bit of a rest. But I do have these to look forward to:

Smokin’ Pilchards EP launch

Scarycanary the Venue, 108A High Street, Stourbridge DY8 1DT

Saturday 19th November 8 – 11pm

I’ll be supporting eminent folk-blues-sters Smokin’ Pilchards as they launch their new EP in Stourbridge’s grooviest venue – and what’s more, it’s only £3 entry!

Oration: Jessica Law performs and lectures on the topic of Penny Dreadfuls

The Impact Hub, 58 Oxford Street, Birmingham B5 5NR

Tuesday 6th December 6.30 – 10pm (FREE ENTRY!)

I’ll be headlining this excellent evening of music and lectures with a talk on the history and impact of “penny dreadfuls”, the serialized Gothic pulp fiction that terrorized the masses of the 18th and 19th century. This (hopefully fascinating and hilarious) lecture will be interspersed with some of my most sinister songs, plus readings from my novel, “Jack the Re-animator”. I figuratively can’t wait!

Regular haunts

As well as one-off bookings, there are a range of open mic nights I frequent on a regular basis and would strongly recommend to performers and spectators alike:

Kitchen Garden Cafe, Kings Heath, Birmingham

First Monday of every month, 7.30 sign up, doors 8pm

An lovely intimate, acoustic (un-amplified) open mic night welcoming music, spoken word, and basically anything (legal) you can do without a PA system!

Waterstones on the Mic

Waterstones, High Street, Birmingham

Last Wednesday of every month, 5.30 sign up, doors 6pm

A groovy, easy-to-get-to, slightly amplified (one microphone at the moment!) open mic night in central Birmingham, welcoming spoken word, music, magic, and anything in between!

Sunday Shenanigans at Scarycanary

Scarycanary The Venue, High Street, Stourbridge

Every Sunday, sign up 7pm, doors any time after that

(Best to contact them to book a slot in advance)

A fully amplified open mic night for singer-songwriters and bands of any size, in a super cool venue!

Permission to Speak

Scarycanary The Venue, High Street, Stourbridge

One Thursday a month (usually the first?), sign up 7pm, doors 7.30

(Best to contact them to book a slot in advance)

An excellent spoken word event welcoming poetry, storytelling, comedy, magic – anything spoken!

Southcart Books

53b Lower Hall Lane, Walsall

Various daytime events (usually weekends)

This, the only independent bookshop in the Black Country, holds a whole range of excellent and welcoming events, ranging from author readings to book clubs and writing workshops – “check it out”, as the young folks say!
